How Much Risk is Too Much?

Population Growth, Transients, Drugs Drive Crime

While most Central Oregon cities have crime rates less than the Oregon and National average, the risk of loss is growing. Bend is at the national average for Property Crimes (Burglary, Larceny, Motor Vehicle Theft, Arson). Redmond is struggling, and local government is responding with new efforts to rein in crime.

OVERVIEW: The FBI reports that in the most recent reporting year of 2013, the average LOSS PER BURGLARY was $2,322.

According to the 2014 FBI Uniform Crime Report, Bend had 309 burglaries, Redmond 382, Prineville 629 and Madras 382. Sunriver, Sisters and Lapine do not participate in the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting system, so no stats are available to the public.

WHAT DRIVES CRIME?

Population Growth, Transients and Drugs are the key drivers for crime. While Medford, Oregon has more significant problems than Central Oregon cities, the root causes are similar. (link not advised for mobile devices)

Particularly troubling are the number of news reports about burglaries where a family member walks in on a crime-in-progress. (link not advised for mobile devices.) A desperate drug user, whose escape route is blocked by a unsuspecting family member, creates a especially dangerous situation.
